Bed Care Management & Prevention
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of residents being cared for in bed within residential and nursing homes. While this may sometimes be necessary due to health needs, it is important to remain vigilant and ensure that residents are not being cared for in bed unnecessarily.
Encouraging residents to get out of bed regularly—even for short periods—can have significant benefits for physical health, mental wellbeing, and social engagement. Wherever possible, residents should be supported to access communal areas, engage with others, and maintain a daily routine.
To support care staff in this decision-making process, we have developed a Bed Care Prevention Tool. This tool is designed to guide residential and nursing home teams when considering whether a person should, or should continue to, be cared for in bed.
The tool includes:
- Prompts to liaise with professionals (e.g. therapy teams, GPs, nursing staff) when making decisions about bed care.
- Guidance on identifying and addressing the causes of bed care, such as undiagnosed medical issues, pain, poor seating provision, or low motivation.
- Action plan prompts to support and encourage residents to get out of bed safely and meaningfully.
The aim is to promote residents’ right to access their full environment, engage with others, and preserve or regain their independence and quality of life.
If you would like access to this tool and would be willing to share your experience or thoughts to help us improve future resources, please get in touch at pe.service@hcpa.co.uk — we’d really value your feedback.
