It is important that care homes provide a range of chairs to accommodate different shapes, sizes, and individual needs. The right chair can significantly improve comfort, posture, and safety for residents.

Specialist seating needs

In cases where standard chairs, including recliners or chairs with anti-slip mats or one-way glide sheets, are insufficient, a more specialist seating solution may be required.

To support the decision for specialist seating, documentation should include:

  • Evidence of difficulty or unsuitability with standard seating
  • Description of any postural issues such as leaning or sliding
  • Duration the individual can tolerate a seating position before needing to be repositioned

This information will help the assessing occupational therapist make an informed recommendation.

Please refer to the Funding section for more details on criteria and processes for funding specialist seating.
