Risk
- Environmental hazards can increase the risk of a person falling.
Reason
- Creating a safe environment reduces the likelihood of a fall.
Interventions
- Check trip hazards are removed where possible.
- Ensure that all spills are cleaned up as soon as possible and use a yellow warning sign to draw attention to the hazard.
- Make sure that all rugs have a non slip underlay and consider replacing frayed carpets.
- Ensure hand rails are easily accessible and located in appropriate areas.
- Always make sure that non slip bath mats are used in the bath and shower.
- Ensure sensor mats are in place where appropriate and that they are correctly positioned.
- Avoid using dark coloured sensor mats as certain individuals (especially those living with dementia) may mistake them for holes and try to step over them.
- Check sensor mat batteries.
- Check appropriate lights are on at night see tips on how to tackle falls using ideas such as: illuminating light switches, footprints, walking frames and toilets, and help people navigate hallways, corridors bathrooms, and even their own bedrooms, during the night to prevent them from falling.
Request a ‘home hazard assessment’ from your local occupational therapy service. You can also refer to the Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue service for support here.
Considerations
- It is important that the individual’s capacity to make decisions around this specific area is considered and documented.
- Individuals who have capacity regarding these decisions can make choices about their environment. You need to document their ability to make this decision, as well as what they chose to do every time is it relevant.
- You may need to inform them of the benefits and risks, if they are not aware, or you may need to remind them if they have difficulty remembering things.
- If the individual is assessed as not having capacity regarding these decisions, this needs to be documented appropriately and interventions need to be implemented and documented as part of a Best Interests Decision, using appropriate paperwork.
