Slide sheets are used to reduce friction during transfers and repositioning, minimising the risk of skin damage or discomfort. This is particularly important for individuals who are frail, or who experience pain with movement.
The slide sheet has two layers that slide on each other, and can be 2 separate sheets or a on that is a continuous loop. Whichever type it is, it needs to be long enough to go from under the person’s head to under their heels. If the person can bend their knees and assist with the manoeuvre (e.g. to move up the bed) by pushing with their feel on the mattress, then the slide sheet would only need to be long enough to go from under the person’s head to under their pelvis.
Wendylett Slide Sheet System
The Wendylett system is a type of slide sheet that can remain in situ under the individual, unlike standard slide sheets which are typically removed after use.
- Base Sheet: Acts like a fitted sheet and stays on the bed
- Top Sheet: Works with the base sheet to facilitate sliding and repositioning
- Especially beneficial for night-time repositioning or for users who require regular movement in bed to prevent pressure injuries
Staff need to be trained to use the Wendylett Slide Sheet System in their Moving and Assisting training, and should review suitability regularly, especially after any change in condition of the individual.
