Risk
- Having a visual impairment can increase the risk of falls.
Reason
- As we get older, our vision changes. This can affect our depth perception and may also cause problems distinguishing shapes or colours, particularly if there are patterns, such as with patterned carpet.
- Individuals are act in an increased risk of falls if they are not wearing the correct glasses or lenses.
Interventions
- Make sure that the individual’s glasses are fitted well and are clean and not damaged.
- Ensure that their glasses are accessible and correct for the task that they are undertaking ( i.e. that they are not wearing reading glasses whilst walking).
- Make sure that the individuals have regular eye examinations. If they are aged over 60 years they are eligible for a free NHS eye test. This can be every two years, however the local optometrist will advise as to how often they need to be seen.
- You can use the find an optician NHS website Sight Tests – NHS to locate your nearest optician
Considerations
- It is important that the individual’s capacity to make decisions around this specific area is considered and documented.
- Individuals who have capacity regarding these decisions can make choices about whether they wear their glasses, go for Optician appointments etc. You need to document their ability to make this decision, as well as what they chose to do every time is it relevant.
- You may need to inform them of the benefits and risks, if they are not aware, or you may need to remind them if they have difficulty remembering things.
- If the individual is assessed as not having capacity regarding these decisions, this needs to be documented appropriately and interventions need to be implemented and documented as part of a Best Interests Decision, using appropriate paperwork.
