With temperatures remaining exceptionally high, care homes should immediately check that heating systems are switched off and that automatic timers have not activated heating unnecessarily. Running heating during hot weather can significantly increase indoor temperatures, heighten the risk of heat-related illness for residents and staff, and make it more difficult to maintain a safe and comfortable environment, which is paramount for the safety.
Please can you physically check all radiators are not on and if they are immediately turn them off. If your heating system is faulty and prevents you from turning it off, this should be treated as an urgent situation, residents should be moved to a cool area and urgent (same day) repairs undertaken.
All community and homecare providers should also check heating systems and automatic timers, particularly where people are being supported in their own homes. If there are concerns that heating is adding to the risk, please escalate this promptly to the relevant person or next of kin so action can be taken to keep people safe.
