When recruiting, remember you must see the original DBS certificate in person – copies or photos aren’t accepted. The new SARA helpline (0300 131 2784) offers support for sensitive applications, and digital ID checks are now allowed through approved providers. Read the updated DBS guidance on this and two other major changes to the DBS process…
DBS (CRB) Service Updates
Employer Guide: Important Reminder on the ‘Update Service’
Employers have long relied on the DBS ‘Update Service’ to monitor staff certificates. The latest update reminds that you must view the original certificate in person. Copies, photographs, or notarised screenshots (including video links) are not acceptable You can find the full employer guidance, which also covers consent, legal entitlement checks, and how to perform multiple status checks, on the official DBS page here: DBS Update Service: employer guide.
Support
The DBS has updated its Accessibility Support page, now including a dedicated helpline for the Sensitive Applications Referral & Authorisation (SARA) team. Care providers supporting staff who may need sensitive applications, such as transgender applicants, can now dial 0300 131 2784 directly or email sensitive@dbs.gov.uk for tailored assistance. This is especially useful for care homes and domiciliary care agencies aiming to maintain inclusive, respectful recruitment processes.
ID Checking & Press Enquiries
The DBS identity‑checking guidelines have been updated to include new digital ID verification methods too, providing flexibility during recruitment. We recommend reviewing the full guidance available on GOV.UK. View here .
Separately, the DBS media enquiries page has also been refreshed, updating its press office telephone numbers – important for all providers managing public statements or media collaborations.
What care providers need to do:
- Update internal procedures to ensure DBS certificates are always inspected in person.
- Share the new SARA helpline (0300 131 2784) with staff who may need extra support during a sensitive application.
- Review your ID-checking policies to incorporate any digital verification options while ensuring compliance.
- Note the new press contacts in case your organisation needs to liaise with media or respond to external enquiries.
