Care staff and providers are being encouraged to consider Hertfordshire Health Walks, either by attending with the person you support or by suggesting they take part.

More than 4,300 organised walks were delivered across the county between April 2025 and March 2026, with participants reporting improvements in physical activity, overall health and social connection.

The programme is free to attend and is supported by volunteers who help lead walks in local communities.

Organisers said they are recruiting new volunteers, with the next volunteer training session due to take place on Thursday 21 May in Stevenage.

Organisers have also published the summer health walk timetable for May to August 2026. They said more than 100 walks a week will run, ranging from beginner-friendly options to brisk evening and weekend routes.

Further information on routes and timetables is available through Hertfordshire County Council’s Hertfordshire Health Walks service.

Hertfordshire Health Walks delivered 4,369 guided walks between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026, attracting 56,835 attendances across the county, organisers said.

  • 70% said they were more physically active
  • 65% said they felt healthier overall
  • 59% said they felt more socially connected

These figures come from follow-up feedback collected 12 months after walkers registered with the scheme, which aims to improve both physical and mental wellbeing through free, regular group walks.

To mark National Walking Month, a mass health walk event is scheduled for Wednesday 6 May, featuring 20 walks taking place across Hertfordshire.

The scheme says it aims to help more residents take part in regular walking and improve health and wellbeing across the county.
