For many young people, a role in adult social care may be one of their first experiences of the workplace. Whilst they may have the right values and potential, expectations around attendance, teamwork, communication, professional behaviour and accountability may be completely new.
A well-designed induction can help young employees understand:
- What professionalism looks like in a care setting
- The importance of punctuality, attendance and reliability
- How to communicate effectively with colleagues and people who draw on care and support
- Professional boundaries and confidentiality
- Working as part of a team
- How to seek support and ask questions
- The responsibilities that come with working in a regulated profession
Taking time to explain workplace expectations rather than assuming knowledge can improve confidence, performance and retention, whilst helping young people build rewarding long-term careers in adult social care.
