Every week, Hertfordshire County Council’s Hertfordshire Equipment Services technicians attend costly and unnecessary breakdown calls to hoists. In many cases, this is due to broken power leads.

As many of you may know, the hoist will not function whilst it is connected to the mains supply; therefore it is necessary to remove the power lead to hoist individuals. How the power lead is removed is far more important than you may think.

Always remove the power lead from the wall, by the plug. NEVER pull the lead out from the motor on the hoist.

As the picture shows, over time this process causes the lead to fracture.

In many cases, it is not only the outer sleeve that breaks but also the cable inside increasing the risk of electric shock to the user or in some cases, fire.
