This course will cover the role of nutrition and hydration at the end of life and the factors to consider . Looking at the evidence, the nutritional, medical, ethical, legal and emotional aspects will be discussed, in addition to how best to support both patients, relatives, friends and staff. The role of timely and appropriate communication skills will be explored using case studies.
Learning objectives:
• Describe the role of nutrition in palliative and terminal care.
• Apply a person centred and individual approach to the nutritional needs of a person at the end of life
• Identify and provide the types of foods and drinks that may be more acceptable
• Follow the ICB Guidance on the Use of prescribed Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) at the very end of life.
• Recognise the importance of using effective communication skills when supporting patients with eating and drinking at end of life.
