The Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Care and Management of Diabetes provides comprehensive knowledge of diabetes, including its types, causes, signs and symptoms. It explores relevant anatomy and physiology, treatment and management strategies, potential complications, and the wider social and health impacts of the condition.
The aim of this qualification is to enhance understanding and awareness of diabetes among care professionals. By completing the course, learners will be able to:
• Explain the types, causes, signs and symptoms of diabetes, alongside the relevant anatomy and physiology.
• Describe diabetes in context, including its prevalence and implications for public health and society.
• Outline assessment, diagnosis, treatment and day-to-day self-management of diabetes, including healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle factors, and sources of local and national support.
• Identify and explain common complications (e.g. hypo/hyperglycaemia, neuropathy, retinopathy, cardiovascular and kidney disease) and ways to manage or reduce risk.
To achieve the qualification, learners must successfully complete four mandatory units:
• Understand diabetes
• Diabetes in context
• Understand the treatment and management of diabetes
• Understand the complications of diabetes
The course includes four mandatory tutor-led sessions to support learners in developing the required knowledge, skills and behaviours for successful completion. Learners must also complete and submit coursework within the timeframes set by the Tutor/Assessor. Both learners and their managers share responsibility for ensuring all submissions are authentic and completed on time.
What are the entry requirements?
• Prospective learners must have completed a comprehensive induction and mandatory service training.
• They should possess a strong command of the English language (e.g., Level 2).
