This course supports care staff to deliver safe, effective, and person centred one to one support for people living with dementia. It focuses on best practice in special observation, helping staff understand when and why it is used, their responsibilities, and how to use it in a way that benefits both the person receiving care and the staff providing support.
The course uses practical examples to explore communication, approach, spotting distress, and responding appropriately. It also provides guidance on de escalation techniques to reduce behaviours of distress and support positive outcomes.
Entry Requirements: Learners should have completed their staff induction and have basic awareness of dementia as a minimum.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the purpose of special observation in dementia care
• Identify the benefits and challenges of providing one to one support
• Describe best practice in special observation
• Understand their responsibilities when carrying out special observation
• Develop communication skills and approaches that support people living with dementia
• Recognise signs of distress and respond appropriately
• Use techniques to de escalate behaviours of distress and promote wellbeing
