Following Oliver McGowan’s tragic death in hospital, his mother, Paula McGowan OBE, launched Oliver’s Campaign to advocate for meaningful training for health and social care staff on learning disabilities and autism.
In response, the government published Right to be Heard and committed to developing a standardised training package informed by best practices and insights from people with lived experience and experts.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred training of meaningful training for health and social care staff on learning disabilities and autism. It is co-delivered by trainers with lived experience and covers:
- Avoiding diagnostic overshadowing
- Common co-occurring conditions
- Legal frameworks (Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act, Autism Act, Equality Act)
- Reasonable adjustments, including hospital passports
- Appropriate DNACPR application
- Professional culture, biases, and their impact
- Accessible communication
- Understanding and responding to individuals and families
- Ask Listen Do framework
- Learning from LeDeR
