Are you ready for this year’s Winter Pressures?
This course will equip your staff with the knowledge and skills needed to recognise early signs of deterioration in the individuals you care for, and to prevent them from deteriorating further, so that they can remain healthy, and at home, wherever possible. Ultimately it will mean that the people you care for are much more likely to continue to thrive throughout the difficult winter months.

Learning objectives:

• Have a basic awareness of respiratory anatomy and physiology
• Have an awareness of dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia and the importance of oral health
• Understand the importance of posture in the prevention of chest infections
• Understand physical observations – look, listen, feel & smell
• Have a good understanding of vital signs and how to measure them – temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturations
• Have a working understanding of the NEWS2/RESTORE2 ‘Track & Trigger’ system, and how to use it to recognise deterioration and to determine appropriate management in an acutely unwell person
• Be able to use SBARD documentation to handover information appropriately
• Have an awareness of the importance of recognising signs of sepsis
• Be aware of how to assess an unconscious patient using Glasgow Coma Scale
• Be aware of the signs of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
• Have a basic understanding of specimens – urine, stool, vomit & sputum
• Have an understanding of how to use the Hertfordshire Management of a Person who has Fallen Pathway
