Course Overview
This two-day extended knowledge course is designed for homecare staff who have been in their role for at least 6 months and already have a good understanding of medication handling and administration. Learners will deepen their knowledge of key medication topics, build confidence in person-centred medication support, and strengthen their ability to handle complex or high-risk situations in home settings.

This course is aligned with the Workforce Development Pathway under:
• Care or Support Worker – Established in their role with consolidated skills and experience
• Enhanced Care Worker – Delegated healthcare activities and/or condition-specific support

Entry Requirements
Participants must have completed the Care Certificate or equivalent induction training and worked in a homecare role for a minimum of 6 months.

Learning objectives:

• Understand legal responsibilities, consent, and professional boundaries
• Minimise medication errors and promote safe practice
• Identify types of medication and appropriate responses to side effects
• Confidently use MAR charts including PRN, omissions, and variable doses
• Understand the handling and storage of medication in home settings
• Support self-administration while promoting dignity and safety
• Navigate complex medication needs for individuals with long-term or high-risk conditions
• Ensure safe use of homely remedies and over-the-counter products
• Provide appropriate end-of-life medication support
• Communicate effectively around medication, capacity, and concerns
• Participate in audits, reviews, and continuous improvement

Bookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.
Delegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.
