Course Overview
This two-day extended knowledge course is aimed at care professionals who have been in their role for at least 6 months and already have a strong foundation in dementia care. It explores how to support people with dementia in a more skilled and responsive way, in line with person-centred frameworks and national best practice. The course includes an introduction to positive behaviour support planning.
This course is aligned with the Workforce Development Pathway under:
• Care or Support Worker – Established in their role with consolidated skills and experience
• Enhanced Care Worker – Delegated healthcare activities and/or condition-specific support
Entry Requirements
Learners must have completed the Dementia Person Centred Support Care Strategies course or equivalent.
Learning objectives:
• Understand types and progression of dementia
• Promote early diagnosis and advance care planning
• Apply the Mental Capacity Act and support informed decision-making
• Encourage risk-positive care
• Explore appropriate use of medication in dementia care
• Support prevention and enablement approaches
• Deliver person-centred dementia care
• Understand memory, sensory loss, and communication needs
• Create dementia-friendly environments
• Respond to behaviours of distress and apply positive behaviour strategies

Bookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.
Delegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.
