Course Overview
This two-day course is designed for care home staff who have at least 6 months’ experience in their role and a sound knowledge of medication procedures. It offers extended learning to strengthen safe, accurate, and person-centred medication support in residential settings. The course includes key legal, ethical, and practical components, helping staff navigate challenges confidently and in line with best practice.
This course is aligned with the Workforce Development Pathway under:
• Care or Support Worker – Established in their role with consolidated skills and experience
• Enhanced Care Worker – Delegated healthcare activities and/or condition-specific support
Entry Requirements
Participants must have completed a Care Certificate or equivalent and have worked in care for a minimum of 6 months.
Learning objectives:
• Understand legal frameworks and professional responsibilities
• Improve medication accuracy and reduce errors
• Identify administration routes and responses to side effects
• Interpret MAR charts and manage PRN, omissions, and variable doses
• Safely handle and dispose of controlled drugs
• Apply mental capacity principles in medication support
• Tackle common and complex challenges in care home settings
• Support self-administration safely and effectively
• Use homely remedies appropriately
• Provide safe, respectful medication support at end of life
• Communicate clearly around medication concerns
• Understand medication governance and quality assurance processes

Bookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.
Delegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.
