One day course at HCPA Campus
Many people gradually spend increasing amounts of time in bed due to illness, reduced mobility, frailty, pain, or changes in their health. Without early intervention, this can lead to loss of independence, increased care needs, reduced quality of life, and the development of contractures.
This practical course will help care staff identify the early signs that someone may be at risk of becoming dependent on long-term bed care and explore simple, realistic strategies to maintain mobility, comfort, posture, and engagement. Participants will learn how small changes in daily care, positioning, seating, activity, and goal setting can make a significant difference in preventing avoidable decline.
The session will also cover the impact of contractures, how to support people who have developed them, and how to provide safe, person-centred care when long-term bed care becomes necessary.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the impact and risks of long-term bed care management.
- Recognise the factors that increase the risk bed care.
- Explain how to prevent the risk of being cared for in bed through: Simple Seating, Activity and Posture, Goals, actions, and evidence
- Understand the impact of contractures and how to support people who have developed them.
- Explain how to support people when long term bed care is necessary.
