This course combines essential knowledge and practical skills in catheter care and continence management, supporting health and social care staff to deliver safe, effective and person-centred care.
The training explores the purpose, care and maintenance of urinary catheters, alongside a broader understanding of continence and how to support individuals experiencing continence difficulties. It focuses on reducing risks, promoting dignity and improving quality of life for those receiving care.
This training is ideal for care staff supporting individuals with urinary catheters and those experiencing continence issues.
Course Summary
This course covers:
• What a urinary catheter is and its purpose
• Basic anatomy and function of the urological system
• Reasons for catheter use, including advantages and associated risks
• Care and maintenance of urethral and suprapubic catheters
• Infection prevention and reducing catheter associated complications
• Drainage systems and urine specimen collection
• Troubleshooting common catheter issues
• Factors affecting continence and continence management
• The impact of incontinence on an individual’s wellbeing and dignity
• Methods for identifying continence needs
• Strategies and equipment to support continence
• Monitoring, recording and reporting continence care
• The impact of conditions such as dementia, stroke, MS and spinal injury on continence
• Duty of care and person-centred approaches to continence support
By the end of this course, learners will:
• Understand how to safely manage and maintain urinary catheters
• Recognise risks associated with catheter use and how to reduce complications
• Understand the causes and impact of continence issues
• Apply appropriate strategies to support individuals with continence needs
• Use equipment and monitoring approaches effectively
• Deliver person-centred care that promotes dignity, comfort and wellbeing
