One day course at HCPA Campus

This session will increase care staff’s awareness of the wide range of equipment, small aids, and adaptations available to support people with everyday activities, improve comfort, and promote independence. Delegates will explore both commonly used and less familiar equipment, including solutions such as Wendyletts, turning systems, adaptive equipment, and other practical aids that can make a significant difference to a person’s daily life. It will also focus on when to spot if equipment is no longer safe for a person concerning sling sizes and ability therefore knowing when to make referrals to the Community Occupational Therapy teams.

The session is not designed to replace moving and handling training. Instead, it focuses on helping staff recognise the equipment that is available, understand its purpose and limitations, identify whe current equipment may no longer be appropriate, and know when specialist advice or assessment should be sought.

Participants will also gain an understanding of referral pathways to Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Wheelchair Services, and other relevant services, ensuring people receive the right support at the right time.

This session is particularly beneficial for senior care staff, team leaders, and any staff members who regularly identify equipment needs or complete referrals, helping them feel more confident in recognising appropriate solutions and accessing the right services.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Recognise a wide range of equipment, small aids, and adaptations that can support comfort, safety, independence, and participation in everyday activities.
Identify opportunities where equipment may benefit the people they support and understand when to consider discussing or requesting further assessment.
Explain the purpose, limitations, and key safety considerations of commonly used equipment, recognising when further advice or specialist moving and handling support is required.
Recognise when existing equipment, such as slings, stand aids, transfer equipment, or seating, may no longer be appropriate and requires review or reassessment.
Identify when specialist assessment is required and understand the referral pathways to Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Wheelchair Services, and other relevant services.
Apply a person-centred approach when recognising equipment needs, ensuring individuals receive the right support, at the right time, from the right professional.
