Course Overview

Welcome to the Dementia Tier 3: Complex Care & Management course. This programme is designed for experienced practitioners, senior staff, team leaders, managers, nurses, and practice leaders who have responsibility for developing, overseeing, or improving dementia care within their service.

Across 2 days, learners will develop an advanced understanding of complex dementia care, including atypical and young-onset presentations, person-centred and trauma-informed approaches, risk-positive decision-making, and behavioural expressions of need. The course examines how language, workplace culture, leadership, governance, and staff development influence the lived experiences of people with dementia.

Learners will also explore the legal and ethical frameworks that underpin dementia care, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005, safeguarding principles, best-interest decision-making, human rights, and restrictive practice. The course concludes by considering emerging developments in dementia care and supporting learners to create a practical, organisation-specific action plan for strengthening future practice within their service.

Entry Requirements: Learners must have completed dementia training at Tier 2, or equivalent intermediate or extended-knowledge dementia training, before attending this course. They should have a good existing understanding of person-centred dementia care and experience of supporting people living with dementia.

Learners should also be working in a senior, supervisory, nursing, management, or practice-leadership role, or have responsibilities for overseeing dementia practice, care planning, risk management, staff development, quality assurance, or service improvement.

Learning objectives:

Day 1
• Explain the principles of person-centred approaches and describe their significance for staff, people using services, commissioners, and regulators in complex scenarios.
• Describe the importance of inclusive, non-clinical language and explain how it supports dignity, reduces stigma, and improves communication with key stakeholders.
• Outline organisational responsibilities when responding to behaviours of concern and describe significant evidence-based approaches, including Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed care, and sensory profiling.
• Explain the value of proactive approaches and identify ways to embed Positive Behaviour Support and related practices within team culture, while promoting psychological safety for staff.
• Identify dementia-specific monitoring tools, including therapeutic observations, ABC charts, deterioration tools, and effective documentation, and outline how they strengthen governance and improve outcomes.
• Describe common myths in dementia care and explain how they can be challenged through evidence-based practice and strong leadership.

Day 2
• Outline the main legal and ethical frameworks, including the Mental Capacity Act, safeguarding principles, and duty of care, and explain their application in dementia care.
• Describe the importance of staff training and supervision and identify ways to promote workforce development at an organisational level.
• Summarise emerging trends in dementia care and identify strategies to future-proof services in line with best practice, policy developments, and regulatory expectations.
• Develop a practical, organisation-specific action plan that aligns with best practice, regulatory expectations, and governance systems to improve dementia care outcomes.
