1.5 hour online session via Virtual Classroom

This course supports care staff to develop a clear understanding of depression, dementia, and delirium in older people, often referred to as the three Ds. It focuses on recognising similarities and differences between these conditions and the risks of diagnostic overshadowing, including the potential impact on safety, wellbeing, and quality of care.

The course aims to build staff confidence in spotting early signs of change, understanding when concerns may indicate delirium or depression rather than dementia progression, and knowing how and when to escalate concerns. Early recognition and appropriate response are key to improving outcomes for people using services.

Entry Requirements: Learners should have completed their staff induction and have basic awareness of dementia as a minimum.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the similarities and differences between dementia, delirium, and depression
• Recognise the risks associated with diagnostic overshadowing and how to avoid it in practice
• Identify early signs and symptoms of delirium and understand what action to take if it is suspected
• Be aware of the risk of suicide and self-harm in older people
• Understand the importance of timely escalation and seeking appropriate clinical support
• Know where to go for help and support if concerned about a change in a resident or service user’s presentation

Standards mapping
This course is mapped to the new dementia care standards:
• Person-centred care
• Responsive support for changing dependency
• Skills and competence
• Comprehensive health care
