Dysphagia Awareness for care professionals working in Learning Disabilities in Hertfordshire – with HPFT

Throughout 2024, Hertfordshire’s Specialist Learning Disability Service will be offering FREE Dysphagia Awareness Workshops for all staff or carers working with adults with learning disabilities across Hertfordshire.

This course is ideal for anyone who works closely with people who have dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) or as a carer looking to develop your carer knowledge and skills. Any carer welcome; this training day would be good for a new starter or as a refresher to staff who have previous experience in this area.

This is a face-to-face and interactive session. We will cover;
• The Anatomy and Physiology of Head & Neck
• Normal and Abnormal Swallow
• Negative Health Consequences
• Assessment
• The Multi-Disciplinary Team (the roles of the people supporting a person with a dysphagia)
• Dysphagia Management

Learning objectives:
• Why dysphagia is an issue for adults with learning disabilities.
• The normal swallowing process.
• Warning signs of dysphagia.
• The impact of dysphagia.
• When and how to refer to the multi-disciplinary team involved in the management of dysphagia.
• Assessment and management of dysphagia.
