Good communication skills are essential when working in services providing support for people living with dementia. Care professionals require effective communication skills in order to enable person-centred approach. This course introduces the importance of communication in dementia services and ways to overcome barriers to meet individual needs and preferences in communication. It is aimed at those who are working in dementia settings, or those wanting to develop in this area.

Learning objectives:
• Explain the impact of memory and language difficulties on communication
• Describe how to adapt the environment to minimise sensory difficulties experienced by an individual living with dementia
• Outline how life story information may enable or support more effective communication
• Explain of the importance of non-verbal communication e.g. body language, visual images and the appropriate use of touch
• Outline common causes of distressed behaviour by people living with dementia
• Describe how the behaviour of others might affect a person living with dementia

Delegates are expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, and share their own experiences, whilst respecting confidentiality.
