Choking remains one of the most significant and preventable risks for people who receive care and support. To help providers strengthen their approach to risk reduction and safe practice, Care England has published a new white paper: Preventing Choking Deaths Among People with Learning Disabilities.

Drawing on national learning, regulatory expectations and best practice guidance, the resource explores what effective choking prevention looks like across social care, supported living and community settings. It includes practical recommendations for providers, managers and frontline staff responsible for supporting people to eat and drink safely.

Importantly, the guidance recognises that eating and drinking are about far more than nutrition. Mealtimes are central to dignity, independence, identity and quality of life. The resource highlights how providers can balance safety with choice, helping people continue to enjoy positive dining experiences whilst avoiding unnecessary restrictions.

The guidance will be particularly valuable for organisations looking to:

  • Review and strengthen choking risk management processes.
  • Improve staff knowledge and confidence.
  • Enhance governance and oversight arrangements.
  • Promote collaborative working across teams and professionals.
  • Support a culture of continuous learning and safer care.
