The epilepsy specialist nursing team provide specialist support in relation to the management of epilepsy for people over 18 years who have learning disabilities. Their role is to ensure that person centred care principles are applied, and steps are put in to reduce the risks associated with Epilepsy are reduced as low as possible whilst working with the individual to maintain the best quality of life.
They work in conjunction with the person managing the Epilepsy (consultant neurologists/consultant psychiatrists and/or GP’s) advocating for the person with learning disabilities and family/paid carers. This includes individualised care planning, including providing Rescue Medication Protocols for the management of seizures with ‘emergency medications’ such as buccal midazolam/rectal diazepam. They will work collaboratively with other professionals to manage a person’s epilepsy needs at end of life using a holistic approach to support family and/or paid carers.
