Overview
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that CQC regulated service providers ensure their staff receive training on learning disability and autism which is appropriate to the person’s role. This is to ensure the health and social care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate, and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff. Training is co-delivered by trainers with lived experience of learning disability and autism.

Who is Tier 1 training for?
Tier 1 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.
This course is designed for people in roles in which they are not directly involved in the provision of care and support, however, their responsibilities involve interactions with individuals who may have a learning disability or autistic people.

Prior to attending, delegates must have completed the e-learning module which can be found here and present evidence of completion.
Please note this is managed on the national platform e-learning for healthcare and is not managed by HCPA. Participants will need to have an account or register for one. Guidance and support can be found here

What does the Tier 1 entail?
Delivered by a trio of trainers, including an experts with lived experienced of learning disabilities and of autism, sessions provide an opportunity for delegates to ask questions, listen and talk to someone with a learning disability and an autistic person, who will share their own experiences. Attendance to this session requires full interaction from individuals to ensure they develop new knowledge, and can take this back into the workplace and question current practice within their service. This will support to ensure that every person with a learning disability and autistic person has the right to excellent care and service from wherever they access it.

  • How to ask someone how they need to be supported
  • Group questions for discussion
  • Sharing own thoughts and experiences
  • Understanding the need for reasonable adjustments
  • Myth-busting
  • Experiences of using services from those with lived experience

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand that everyone is different and has different needs
  • Give an example of how you can support a person with a learning disability or an autistic person differently
  • Give an overview of what ‘reasonable adjustments’ means
  • Identify changes in practice needed to enable excellent care and services for people with a learning disability and autistic people

Points to note:

• People who have attended Tier 2 face-to-face sessions should not book
• Certificates will be only be issues for delegates who have registered and attended in full. Please do not share booking links with others as they will not receive a certificate.
• As per our T&C’s, this course carries a fee for non-attendance, non-completion or late cancellation.
