Enabling & Mobility CHAMPION – Cohort 01

This course will enable Care professionals to take on the role of Champion within their organisation for this topic. The Champion will have a clear understanding of local and national guidance and legislation for and will cascade this information amongst care teams, improving the safety and quality of care for individuals.

The Enabling and Mobility Champion will equip staff to become an Enabling Care Champion, where they will learn how simple changes can be made to improve functional independence, so that individuals can fully participate in their life physically and mentally, thereby improving overall health outcomes and quality of life, and supporting people to live longer better.

Through this Physiotherapist led course, they will gain enhanced knowledge and practical skills, which will allow them to help individuals improve such things as sit to stand, mobility, and positioning, as well as how to spot early signs of deterioration
Delegates will also be taught the importance of having a questioning mind, which enquires about a person’s current abilities or circumstances, with a view to seeking solutions to improve outcomes

Expectations of being a Champion are as follows:
• Share knowledge to staff through team meetings, mentoring and coaching
• Keep up to date with resources and support via the HCPA Members Zone
• Take responsibility to champion the topic area to ensure the care provider meets best practice standards
• Build strong relationships with professionals
• Support “Better outcomes for the individuals you support” for topic area
• Review Governance of the topic including reviewing and update policies and procedures to meet standards
• Attend yearly CPD and complete reflective accounts to enable revalidation

Selecting your Champion
To help you select your chosen Champion, they will need to:
1. Be a member of staff with authority to mentor staff and work with external partners
2. Have enthusiasm and dedication to promote best practice in the organisation and action change
3. Be committed to multi-disciplinary working, both internally and externally
4. Have confidence and strong communication skills to share information with staff teams via team meetings
5. Have the ability to critically review current governance processes for the topic area

Learning Outcomes:
• Understand the champion role and how this can benefit their organisation
• Understand the process of SMART goal setting and be able to relate this in own place of work
• Understand how to promote an Enabling Care Culture (including spotting problems that may arise and how to appropriately signpost to Professionals)
• Communication and Motivational Strategies (including Goal Setting)
• Anatomy and Physiology (including the importance of physical activity and how to encourage participation in ADLS by using normal movement)
• Posture and Positioning (including awareness of joint positioning and optimal alignment, and how to check sitting posture)
• Therapeutic Handling (including how to facilitate movement by using therapeutic touch)
• Acute Deterioration (including the use of RESTORE2 and NEWS2)

Please note: As per our T&C’s, this course carries a fee in the event of non-attendance, non-completion or late cancellation.
Delegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.
Bookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA
