On the 6th of September, British Airways (BA) announced that the personal and payment details of tens of thousands of customers had been stolen during a data breach. 

 

Hackers carried out a sophisticated, malicious criminal attack that stole the details of payment cards, including the number, expiry date, and three-digit security code, or ‘card verification value’ (CVV), which compromised 382,000 transactions. Consequently, BA has been fined £183m over the  major security breach last year; the biggest penalty ever handed out by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). 

 

How does this affect care providers?

A big part of protecting the availability, confidentiality, integrity and privacy of your data is rooted in the cyber security safeguards that are in place to avoid, or reduce, the disruptions from any attack on data, whether on computers or mobile devices. This is vital for ensuring the quality and safety of care and support. 

 

According to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Cyber Breaches Survey 2019, 32% of businesses and 22% of charities have identified breaches or attacks. Among these organisations, the most common types of breaches or attacks are:

 

  • Phishing (scam) emails (80% of businesses and 81% of charities who experience breaches or attacks)

 

  • Others impersonating their organisation online (28% and 20%)

 

  • Viruses or other malware, including ransomware (27% and 18%).

 

This is why data protection and security is a high priority for businesses and why all your staff must be aware of how to implement effective protective measures.
