Care Certificate (knowledge only) FREE FOR HERTFORDSHIRE CARE PROVIDERS (INCLUDING HOSPICES & NHS STAFF)
These Webinars are to support newly employed care staff to complete the knowledge competencies of the Care Certificate during this COVID-19 pandemic.

The 15 standards will be delivered in 4 x 2.5 hour webinars over 2 days (please note all 4 webinars must be completed).

The staff member will then complete the Care Certificate workbooks and once they have all been completed and all webinars have been fully attended, the learners must submit the workbooks back to HCPA (via email) for assessment. Competency checks will then be carried out in the workplace by a competent person within the organisation.

The Care Certificate workbooks can be found here; please download them to your computer. This will allow you to save your work. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to do this. Once completed, please submit your workbooks via email, to your tutor.

Once someone has been through the training, will they have the full Care Certificate?
No. learners will only have met the knowledge element of the Care Certificate. The responsibility for Care Certificate sign-off rests with the social care employer who will assess competence and sign people off using the revised and updated assessment process.
What do you mean by training and what do you mean by assessment?
By training we mean any intervention that supports the learning of knowledge. By assessment we mean someone who is qualified and competent (e.g. registered manager or trainer) to consider and check whether someone can carry out a specific task safely and effectively.

HSAB Multi-Agency Safeguarding Adults Awareness CoursesFREE FOR HERTFORDSHIRE CARE PROVIDERS

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the current lockdown restrictions a decision has been made to cancel the face to face HSAB Multiagency Safeguarding Adults Awareness Courses taking place from now until the end of August.

HSAB are however delighted to announce that the trainer of this course has offered to run it as a webinar using Microsoft Teams.  Please note, if you don’t have Microsoft Teams on your device, you may still be able to take part. HSAB will give you the instructions prior to the event.

The training will be an equivalent to a full day session and will be delivered in two 90 minutes sessions with a break programmed in. The session will allow delegates plenty of opportunities to interact with the trainer, ask questions or make comments on topics under discussion via the programme’s conversation chat area or using the microphone facility.

It promises to be a good event so why not take this opportunity to update your safeguarding knowledge.

With queries, please contact jane.savage@hertfordshire.gov.uk

Bringing in Volunteers?

If you are taking someone into your service as a volunteer or redeploying people from other jobs, why not look at the quick training options we have for you here? It is pick-and-mix so choose what you think is appropriate.

The Care CertificateFREE FOR HERTFORDSHIRE CARE PROVIDERS

In this difficult time, it will be almost impossible to give a volunteer the full Care Certificate experience.

» During this time of crisis, Care Certificate videos are available for volunteers here
Depending on what the volunteer’s role involves, the manager may select only the videos that they feel are relevant for the volunteer to complete. Temporary COVID-19 assessment sheets for managers to use to ensure the volunteers have watched and understood the videos will be available very soon.

Please note that in order for the full Care Certificate to be achieved by the volunteer, a workbook must be completed, and a manager within the setting must assess the competencies. This can be achieved after the current crisis, if the volunteer will continue to have care duties.

(Remember to ensure an experienced member of staff works alongside the volunteer as much as possible to check competencies)

iLearnFREE FOR HERTFORDSHIRE CARE PROVIDERS

During this challenging time, Hertfordshire County Council has agreed that they will grant volunteers access to several iLearn sessions, including:

  • Dementia
  • Mental Capacity Act

  • COVID-19 Awareness module with information to share with people you are supporting
    .

Please send an email to tracyrice@hcpa.info with the name, organisation, and email address of the person requiring this training. We will then arrange for the person to be granted access.

SCILsFREE FOR HERTFORDSHIRE CARE PROVIDERS

SCILS (distance learning) can be used to educate people from home and our trainers will assess this for volunteers, if you require. A range of topics can be provided, however, we will support you in prioritising the topics necessary for immediate new volunteers. If you require this service, please email kelliehopkins@hcpa.info.

FAQ’s

Question   We have been affected with Covid at our home. A number of our residents have not presented with a cough, some have been asymtomatic, some with an upset stomach. Should we not be alerting homes to this?
Answer In some cases individuals do not always present with a cough and fever and it is true they maybe  asymptomatic. Without a test, it is impossible to confirm if someone is COVID 19 positive . Other care settings have treated individuals as if they had COVID 19, with or without symptoms. Guidelines can be found on GOV.UK
Question We talk about our hand hygiene, do we not need to be getting homes be promoting really good hand hygiene with their clients?
Answer For residents who have capacity, it is good to encourage them to wash their hands as often as they can and to practice social distancing. For residents who lack capacity, staff need to support them and to follow infection prevention control guidelines.
Question How are the CHIT nurses supporting the homes with patients who are COVID positive?
Answer We are supporting care homes by calling them and encouraging them to join webinars on PPE guidance, how to manage deteriorating resident  and with infection and prevention Control guidance. Basic observation training can support staff in managing a deteriorating resident. Care homes can call the CHIT Team or email them on hertsvalleysccg.chitnurse@nhs.net

Nutrition

How should we manage concerns with weight loss, poor appetite or lack of interest in eating?

Nutrition support resources
Undernutrition remains a concern for the older population in Hertfordshire, and isolation as a result of the current Covid 19 crisis is likely to increase this issue.

Local guidance which may be useful, both to help prevent undernutrition at this time and to support older adults recovering from Covid 19, includes:

  • Food First – Eating well for small appetites focuses on enabling patients to increase their nutritional intake by at least 500 calories per day (in addition to other essential nutrients) and can be given out by any healthcare professional without additional explanation
  • Food First – Quick guide is a short version of the above leaflet and shows how an additional 500 calories (in addition to other essential nutrients) can be consumed simply by making 3 or 4 small dietary changes each day
  • Food First – Homemade supplements can be provided together with either of the above resources and is equally suitable for patients living in their own homes or in care homes. The homemade milkshake recipe is nutritionally almost identical to prescribed ONS
  • Eating and drinking at end of life is designed for relatives and carers of people who are reaching the end of their lives. It has been written to help reassure carers that loss of appetite and reduction in food intake is a normal and expected part of the dying process, and that prescribed ONS are unlikely to be helpful at this stage
