SUMMARY:Emergency First Aid at Work
DESCRIPTION:Course fee: £95+VAT\nA significant saving on a national providers price of £205+VAT \nOne day course at HCPA Campus\n*This course involves physical activity. Delegates must be fit and able to participate*\n\nThe Emergency First Aid at Work qualification\, which conforms with HSE guidance\, provides a comprehensive set of practical skills needed by emergency first aid responders in most workplaces\, giving both the ability and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies.\nThe qualification meets the requirements for training emergency first-aid responders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment. The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the emergency first aid responder\, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED. In line with guidance provided by the HSE\, the qualification supports/approves emergency workplace first aid responders for a period of 3 years\, after which point delegates will need to retake the course. Therefore\, the qualification is valid for 3 years from the date of award. In addition to this\, it is recommended that delegates refresh their knowledge annually. \nTopics covered:\n• Roles and responsibilities of an emergency first aid responder\n• Undertake Primary surveys\n• Provide appropriate first aid for:\n• unresponsive casualties\n• choking\n• external bleeding\n• shock\n• minor injuries \nDelegates will undertake theory and practical assessments throughout the duration of the course\nIt is strongly advised that delegates are physically capable of completing the practical assessment and have a minimum of Level 1 in English to complete the theory assessment. \nHaving first aid measures in place to deal with potential accidents and incidents at work is an incredibly vital part of your health and safety procedure. Hopefully\, some of these skills won’t need to be put into use\, but it is essential that first aiders are ready to act in case of either minor injury or emergency. First aid regulations can be complicated however\, and it may be that you aren’t sure if you have the necessary cover in place. \nNeed First Aid Training?\nOur First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work courses are suitable for staff members who wish to learn new first aid skills and gain an awareness. \nHow Many First Aiders Are Required By Law?\nThe Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014: Regulation 18 require Care providers to provide adequate and appropriate first aid provision to meet the needs of the staff and people using services at all times.\nHowever\, what is adequate and appropriate is quite vague and it can be difficult to know how to ensure you are legally compliant. Therefore\, in order to ensure you do have the adequate number of first aiders in your organisation\, you should carry out a first aid needs assessment. \nHow to Carry Out a First Aid Needs Assessment\nCarrying out a first aid needs assessment may seem a daunting challenge but it really doesn’t need to be. The purpose of a first aid needs assessment is to ensure there are suitable provisions in place in case of an accident or incident. While it isn’t a legal requirement for the first aid needs assessment to be written down or formal\, keeping a written record is recommended. As an employer\, you can use this assessment to demonstrate to the HSE or local authority inspector how you decided what level of first aid provision is required.\nWhen carrying out your first aid needs assessment\, remember to take into account the practicalities of day-to-day work. For example\, what do you do if your first aider goes off sick or is on holiday? Do you have someone in their place that is trained to the same level? \nHow Many First Aiders Do I Need?\nHaving carried out a first aid needs assessment you are now in a place to understand how many first aiders are required. As was explained earlier\, there is not a legal set number of first aiders that you need at work. \nSuggested First Aid numbers

It can help anyone at any given time.\nMusic in dementia care:\n• Promotes verbal and non verbal expression\n• Increases opportunities for meaningful interaction\n• Increases levels of cognitive stimulation\n• Promotes the use of unimpaired cognitive function\n• Enables reminiscence and strengthens self-identity\n• Promotes engagement and communication among residents through social interaction \nBy undertaking this programme\, the delegate and the care organisation commits to deliver work-based learning to share knowledge with wider staff teams\, obtaining consent from participants\, and gathering evidence to support the research project. Champions are also expected to attend monthly online networking sessions to maintain recognition within the programme. \nThe Music in Herts Dementia Care Champion aims to provide delegates with the skills and confidence to embed therapeutic music techniques into dementia care\, improving the quality of life for people living with dementia. Benefits may include improved communication and wellbeing\, reduced anxiety and depression\, increased self-esteem\, cognitive stimulation\, opportunities for reminiscence\, emotional expression\, and connection to cultural identity. \nThe course is co-delivered by HCPA and a Music 24 music therapist. Delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of social care best practice alongside expert advice and demonstrations from a highly experienced music therapist. \nOver three days\, delegates will learn to create personalised music experiences for people living with dementia\, taking into account their musical preferences\, histories\, and cultural backgrounds. Training areas include passive listening to music\, active listening to music\, playing instruments or singing and talking about music.\nLife stories and person-centred approaches are integrated throughout the course to help delegates understand residents’ individual musical journeys. Music is recognised as a valuable tool to support mood and behaviour\, helping care teams embed positive behaviour support approaches.\nDelegates will also learn to use a dedicated toolbox of resources. These include structured session plans with clear instructions to build confidence and facilitate engagement. Session plans will include warm-up exercises\, main activities\, and concluding activities such as singing\, playing instruments\, or movement\, tailored to each resident’s abilities. \nResources – Champions will have access to a resource library of tools\, videos and activity session plans to run in their care service\, in addition to communication tools on how to engage residents\, staff and families\, alongside consent forms. \nPractical activities will involve:\n• Using a variety of instruments\n• Rhythm and pitch exercises\n• Pattern recognition\n• Movement and call-and-response activities\n• Creating personalised playlists to encourage social and cognitive engagement \nDuring the course\, delegates will begin creating music session plans and a personal Champion action plan. On day three\, each delegate will deliver a 10-15 minute music session demonstration and receive developmental feedback to support their ongoing progress. \nAfter completing the three-day course\, an in-service follow-up observation will be arranged. This will assess a live music session and review the delegates action plan. This stage also provides further feedback and is when the service can receive formal recognition. Following the course\, Champions will benefit from a monthly support network that promotes collaboration and continuous improvement in dementia care. They will also gain access to a growing library of therapeutic music resources to enhance their practice. \nEquipment – A musical starter pack will be created for each home to allow sessions to start without any delays. Participants will gain insights into the effects of aging and learn the importance of adopting a person-centred approach when designing exercise sessions. \nResearch shows that chair-based exercises play a crucial role in supporting older adults by enhancing independence and mobility. These exercises can also contribute to fall prevention\, making them a valuable tool in maintaining overall well-being. \nThis qualification is ideal for Care Home and Flexi-Care staff who support elderly people\, equipping them to deliver both group and individual exercise sessions. It may also benefit Community and Homecare staff seeking to promote physical activity among older adults. \nLearning objectives:\n• Know how to plan an evidence-based exercise class\n• Know how to make safe\, effective adaptations to allow all individuals to take part\n• Understand the impact of aging and the importance of person-centred planning \n*Please note: As per our T&C’s\, this course carries a fee in the event of non-attendance\, non-completion or late cancellation.\nBookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.\nDelegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred
