DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nCourse fee: HCPA Standard Member: Fully funded*\nAssociate/Network Member: £75+VAT | Non-member: £150+VAT \nTwo day course at HCPA Campus\nDay 1: 17/02/2027\nDay 2: 18/02/2027\n\nCourse Overview\nExtending Knowledge for Confident\, Collaborative Practice \nThis course develops the knowledge and skills needed to support people who require therapeutic diets due to medical conditions. It explores how to identify and respond to malnutrition and dehydration\, including in those living with dementia or dysphagia\, using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST). \nLearners will also consider cultural and religious dietary needs\, menu planning\, and the role of nutrition and hydration at end of life. Practical communication and support approaches will be explored throughout\, supported by case studies to apply learning in real scenarios. \nThis course is aligned with the Workforce Development Pathway under:\n• Care or Support Worker – Established in their role with consolidated skills and experience\n• Enhanced Care Worker – Delegated healthcare activities and/or condition-specific support \nEntry Requirements\nParticipants must have completed a Care Induction or equivalent and have worked in care for a minimum of 6 months. \nLearning objectives:\n• Identify individuals at risk of malnutrition using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) and develop person centred\, food-based nutritional care plans in line with Integrated Care Board guidance\n• Apply best practice in the use of oral nutritional supplements\, supporting individuals at risk of malnutrition\, including those living with dementia or dysphagia\n• Recognise and respond to eating and drinking difficulties\, including dementia related challenges and the use of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework\n• Demonstrate an understanding of therapeutic diets\, including those for diabetes and other medical conditions\, alongside cultural and religious dietary requirements\n• Explain the role of nutrition and hydration at the end of life and apply a person-centred approach\, including effective communication with individuals\, families and others involved in care \n*Please note: As per our T&C’s\, this course carries a fee in the event of non-attendance\, non-completion or late cancellation.\nBookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.\nDelegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.

This programme is designed for experienced practitioners\, senior staff\, team leaders\, managers\, nurses\, and practice leaders who have responsibility for developing\, overseeing\, or improving dementia care within their service. \nAcross 2 days\, learners will develop an advanced understanding of complex dementia care\, including atypical and young-onset presentations\, person-centred and trauma-informed approaches\, risk-positive decision-making\, and behavioural expressions of need. The course examines how language\, workplace culture\, leadership\, governance\, and staff development influence the lived experiences of people with dementia. \nLearners will also explore the legal and ethical frameworks that underpin dementia care\, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005\, safeguarding principles\, best-interest decision-making\, human rights\, and restrictive practice. The course concludes by considering emerging developments in dementia care and supporting learners to create a practical\, organisation-specific action plan for strengthening future practice within their service. \nEntry Requirements: Learners must have completed dementia training at Tier 2\, or equivalent intermediate or extended-knowledge dementia training\, before attending this course.
