SUMMARY:Understanding self-harm and suicidal ideation intent
DESCRIPTION:Course fee: HCPA Standard Member: Fully funded*\nAssociate/Network Member: £37.50+VAT | Non-member: £75+VAT  \nOne day course at HCPA \nThe issues of self-harm and suicidal ideation can be steeped in stigma within society and for individuals who may experience these difficulties. This training has been developed to promote professional vigilance at the community level and give professionals the knowledge\, skills and confidence to work with affected individuals. \nThe course will explain what self-harm is\, why people use it as a means of coping\, and methods including typical and atypical to show the scale of harmful behaviours. Learners will understand that both Self-harm and suicidal thoughts are deeply complex and multifaceted and will explore what is meant by the term elevated risks. \nIt will explain why people may have suicidal thoughts\, how these range in frequency and intensity and will consider biological considerations for both issues as a way of explaining in more detail their nature including other models such as the Drive\, Soothe\, Threat system\, Lineham stress model and self-harm reinforcing cycle. \nLearner will use the information from the topic areas to start to build a picture of signs that a person may be struggling with suicidal thoughts and cover the NHS Connect\, Understand\, Assist conversation. \nLearners will understand the importance of prevention and protection in care plans rather than trying to gauge risk likelihood. Learners will be taught the concept of harm reduction\, including a variety of personal resources that people who use services can access. \nWe want providers to feel equipped to have conversations with people who they either know or suspect are affected and feel confident to provide person centred support from accessing this training. \nLearner requirements: It would be useful if learners either have prior knowledge of\, or undertakes formal care planning. \nLearning objectives:\n• Understand the definition of self-harm\, that it is a maladaptive behaviour in response to distressing thoughts and feelings. \n• Understand there are many ways a person can cause injury to themselves not just confined to typical known methods\, which will broaden learner knowledge\, understanding and vigilance to the subject.  \n• Understand the biological considerations to self-harm\, that stress\, trauma and difficult events/thoughts lead to a reduction in endorphins and causing injury activates the the body’s pain reward centres.\n• Look at some of the common reasons associated with suicide thoughts/intent but given the complexity of the issue there is rarely a single cause\, rather several factors are usually present.  \n• Understand the Lineham stress model as a way of describing suicidal thoughts/feelings. \n• Understand the scale of suicidal ideation/intent. \n• How knowledge of the subjects can be used to inform care plans.\n• Look at wellness plans\, understand what they are and how they can be used by people who use services \n• Different types of harm reduction methods and tools to reduce suicidal feelings.  \n• Consider the GREATDREAM tips for mental wellness as advocated by the NHS via the depression care pathway.  \n• Understand what organisations and resources can help.  \n• Providers will have an opportunity to reflect and discuss how they will implement learning within their own organisations.  \n \n*Please note: As per our T&C’s\, this course carries a fee in the event of non-attendance\, non-completion or late cancellation.\nBookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.\nDelegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred

Benefits may include improved communication and wellbeing\, reduced anxiety and depression\, increased self-esteem\, cognitive stimulation\, opportunities for reminiscence\, emotional expression\, and connection to cultural identity. \nThe course is co-delivered by HCPA and a Music 24 music therapist. Delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of social care best practice alongside expert advice and demonstrations from a highly experienced music therapist. \nOver three days\, delegates will learn to create personalised music experiences for people living with dementia\, taking into account their musical preferences\, histories\, and cultural backgrounds. Training areas include passive listening to music\, active listening to music\, playing instruments or singing and talking about music.\nLife stories and person-centred approaches are integrated throughout the course to help delegates understand residents’ individual musical journeys. Music is recognised as a valuable tool to support mood and behaviour\, helping care teams embed positive behaviour support approaches.\nDelegates will also learn to use a dedicated toolbox of resources. These include structured session plans with clear instructions to build confidence and facilitate engagement. Session plans will include warm-up exercises\, main activities\, and concluding activities such as singing\, playing instruments\, or movement\, tailored to each resident’s abilities. \nResources – Champions will have access to a resource library of tools\, videos and activity session plans to run in their care service\, in addition to communication tools on how to engage residents\, staff and families\, alongside consent forms. \nPractical activities will involve:\n• Using a variety of instruments\n• Rhythm and pitch exercises\n• Pattern recognition\n• Movement and call-and-response activities\n• Creating personalised playlists to encourage social and cognitive engagement \nDuring the course\, delegates will begin creating music session plans and a personal Champion action plan. These will need to be completed as between days two and three. On day three\, each delegate will deliver a 10-15 minute music session demonstration and receive developmental feedback to support their ongoing progress. \nAfter completing the three-day course\, an in-service follow-up observation will be arranged. This will assess a live music session and review the delegates action plan. This stage also provides further feedback and is when the service can receive formal recognition. Following the course\, Champions will benefit from a monthly support network that promotes collaboration and continuous improvement in dementia care. They will also gain access to a growing library of therapeutic music resources to enhance their practice. \nEquipment – A musical starter pack will be created for each home to allow sessions to start without any delays. This pack will include basic percussion\, scarves and an optional Bluetooth Speaker. More information can be found here\n\nOne day course at HCPA Campus\nThis course is suitable for staff providing direct care or making decisions across all adult care settings \nUnder the Health and Care Act 2022 all CQC-regulated providers must ensure their staff receive training in learning disability and autism that is appropriate to their role.\nThis is supported by the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice\, which sets out how to meet this legal duty. \n\nThis applies to all services\nEven if your service does not currently support autistic people or people with a learning disability\, this requirement still applies.\nPeople with learning disabilities and autistic people may use a wide range of services\, including general\, older people’s\, and non-specialist settings. In some cases\, individuals may not have a formal diagnosis or may not have disclosed it.
