DESCRIPTION:    \nCourse fee: £75+VAT\nThis course is eligible for funding re-imbursement via the Learning & Development Support Scheme (LDSS). More information can be found here\n\nOne day course at HCPA Campus\nThis course is suitable for staff providing direct care or making decisions across all adult care settings \nUnder the Health and Care Act 2022 all CQC-regulated providers must ensure their staff receive training in learning disability and autism that is appropriate to their role.\nThis is supported by the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice\, which sets out how to meet this legal duty. \n\nThis applies to all services\nEven if your service does not currently support autistic people or people with a learning disability\, this requirement still applies.\nPeople with learning disabilities and autistic people may use a wide range of services\, including general\, older people’s\, and non-specialist settings. In some cases\, individuals may not have a formal diagnosis or may not have disclosed it. Therefore\, all staff must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide safe\, respectful\, and inclusive care. \nThe Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred training of meaningful training for health and social care staff on learning disabilities and autism.\nThe Tier 2 course is co-delivered by trainers with lived experience and covers: \n\nAvoiding diagnostic overshadowing\nCommon co-occurring conditions\nLegal frameworks (Mental Capacity Act\, Human Rights Act\, Autism Act\, Equality Act)\nReasonable adjustments\, including hospital passports\nAppropriate DNACPR application\nProfessional culture\, biases\, and their impact\nAccessible communication\nUnderstanding and responding to individuals and families\nAsk Listen Do framework\nLearning from LeDeR\n\nPrior to attending\, delegates must have completed the e-learning module which can be found here\nPlease note this is managed on the national platform “e-learning for healthcare” and is not managed by HCPA. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nCourse fee: HCPA Standard Member: Fully funded*\nAssociate/Network Member: £400+VAT | Non-member: £400+VAT  \nFour day programme open for applications\nDay 1: 04/06/2026 | Day 2: 11/06/2026 | Day 3: 18/06/2026 | Day 4: 25/06/2026\nAll sessions must be attended \nLead Excellence in Care with HCPA Champions\nEmpower your team by developing experienced colleagues to become HCPA Champions – individuals who influence positive\, high-quality change within their care services. \nWhat is an HCPA Champion?\nA Champion is a trained experienced care professional who drives improvements in care practices\, embeds governance\, and models excellence across the organisation.\nThe programmes equip Champions with the confidence\, tools\, and knowledge to influence change\, support colleagues\, and apply best practice consistently.\nChampions revalidate every two years by evidencing change through action plans\, case studies\, and continuing professional development. \nWhy have Champions?\nCare Managers cannot do everything\, they need support from trusted staff to ensure the service remains compliant with evolving national and local guidance. Champions mentor peers\, influence care delivery\, and maintain elevated care standards through ongoing governance and learning. \nWe suggest care providers have a Champion in each relevant topic area. To ensure quality and focus\, each individual may only be a Champion in up to two topic areas: \nThe Mental Capacity CHAMPION course will enable Care professionals to take on the role of Champion within their organisation for this topic. The Champion will have a clear understanding of local and national guidance and legislation for and will cascade this information amongst care teams\, improving the safety and quality of care for individuals. \nLearning Outcomes:\n• Define the role of a Mental Capacity Champion and explain how this role can promote lawful\, person-centred decision-making within the organisation.\n• Describe relevant local and national guidance\, legislation and statutory duties relating to the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and associated Codes of Practice.\n• Define the term “governance” and explain its importance in ensuring accountability and compliance with the MCA.\n• Apply the principles of SMART goal setting to improve MCA-related processes and decision-making in the workplace.\n• Differentiate between the various levels of support required to help individuals make decisions\, and apply this knowledge to practice in line with the statutory principles of the MCA.\n• Analyse how failures in assessment\, record keeping or communication can result in non-compliance with the MCA\, and identify strategies to prevent such errors.\n• Identify individual factors such as cognitive impairment\, mental health conditions or communication needs\, and analyse their impact on a person’s ability to make informed decisions.\n• Evaluate the actions required when there is doubt about a person’s mental capacity\, including conducting or arranging assessments and following best interest decision-making processes.\n• Assess the importance of recognising when a decision may require additional safeguards\, such as involvement of an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA)\, and evaluate when and how to escalate concerns.\n• Develop an approach for regular review of MCA-related policies\, procedures and care plans\, and design strategies to ensure staff support individuals to make their own decisions wherever possible. \nFind out more and apply here \nNote – This is an application\, not a booking.
