Delegates must be fit and able to participate*\nThe First Aid at Work qualification\, which conforms with HSE guidance\, provides a comprehensive set of practical skills needed by first aiders in most workplaces\, giving both the ability and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. The qualification meets the requirements for training first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment. \nThe qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider\, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries\, spinal injuries\, anaphylaxis and correct use of auto-injectors. \nIn line with guidance provided by the HSE\, the qualification supports/approves workplace first aiders for a period of 3 years\, after which point delegates will need to retake the course. Therefore\, the qualification is valid for 3 years from the date of award. In addition to this\, it is recommended that delegates refresh their knowledge annually. \nTopics covered:\n• Roles and responsibilities of an emergency first aid responder\n• Undertake Primary surveys\n• Provide appropriate first aid for:\n• unresponsive casualties\n• choking\n• external bleeding\n• shock\n• minor injuries\n• Undertake Secondary surveys\n• Provide appropriate first aid for:\n• bones\, muscles & joint injuries\n• head & spinal injuries\n• chest injuries\n• burns & scalds\n• eye injuries\n• poisoning\n• anaphylaxis\n• major illness \nDelegates will undertake theory and practical assessments throughout the duration of the course \nIt is strongly advised that delegates are physically capable of completing the practical assessment and have a minimum of Level 1 in English to complete the theory assessment \nSuggested First Aid numbers

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nCourse fee: HCPA Standard Member: Fully funded*\nAssociate/Network Member: £75+VAT | Non-member: £150+VAT  \nTwo day course at HCPA Campus\nDay 1: 19/10/2026\nDay 2: 26/10/2026 \nTwo day course at HCPA Campus \nThis course will teach delegates about the most common neurological conditions including: Traumatic Brain Injury\, Multiple Sclerosis\, Parkinson’s Disease\, Stroke and Huntington’s Chorea. It teaches delegates about the functions of the brain and spinal cord\, and how damage to the central nervous system can affect a person e.g. in terms of movement\, sensation\, communication\, cognition\, pain\, smell\, and taste. The course also covers neuroplasticity in terms of helping individuals improve their function and helping to prevent deterioration. Practical elements will also be involved\, such as handling of the hemiplegic arm and positioning in bed. \nThis course is aligned with the Workforce Development Pathway under:\n• Care or Support Worker – Established in their role with consolidated skills and experience\n• Enhanced Care Worker – Delegated healthcare activities and/or condition-specific support \nEntry Requirements\nParticipants must have completed a Care Induction or equivalent and have worked in care for a minimum of 6 months. \nLearning objectives:\n•To have an understanding of some of the most common neurological conditions and the impact on a person with one of these conditions.\n•To have an understanding of the complexities involved in caring for people with a neurological condition including: physical\, sensory\, behavioural\, cognitive and emotional needs.\n•To have an understanding of the concept of neuroplasticity\n•To be able to use some simple practical techniques such as handling of the hemiplegic arm\, and positioning\, to help improve function and prevent deterioration\n•To be able to recognise the early signs of deterioration and to be able to signpost appropriately to Health Professionals \n*Please note: As per our T&C’s\, this course carries a fee in the event of non-attendance\, non-completion or late cancellation.\nBookings of more than two delegates per site may be amended to allow access to all member organisations at the discretion of HCPA.\nDelegates who are late may not be admitted into the training and a cost incurred.
