Nutrition – Eating for Health in Old Age – Cohort 3

Course description

This course is suitable for all levels of staff who are working in older people care services within residential, nursing or homecare environments
In this course delegates will gain an understanding of how a person nutritional needs and requirements change in old age. We will discuss the risk factors that can lead to a person becoming malnourished and dehydrated and discuss preventative strategies. We will use case studies to explain and perform the nutritional screening using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:
• Explain the physical process of aging and the effect on a person’s nutritional needs and status
• Describe the importance of a balanced diet and discuss the relevance of the Eatwell Guide in old age
• Outline the nutritional and hydration requirements of the older person
• State how the key physical, social and psychological factors can affect an older person’s ability to eat
• Identify the risk factors that can lead to dehydration and malnutrition in the older person
• Use the MUST tool to perform nutritional screening
• Describe and discuss how to meet the nutritional and hydration needs of the older person

Requirements and expectations

Learners will be expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, share their own experiences of working in the care sector, whilst respecting confidentiality, and to share best practice examples

A Onefile (e-portfolio) profile will be created on the learners behalf to support them in the completion of their course
