Nutrition and Learning Disabilities- Cohort 3

Course description

This course is suitable for staff who are working with and supporting service users with Learning Disabilities in Residential, Nursing or Supportive Living environments.

During this course delegates will gain knowledge and an appreciation of the importance of providing and assisting in the provision of a healthy balanced diet through effective meal planning and nutrition related engagement activities. Appropriate strategies will be discussed and explored in order to promote healthier eating patterns in order to encourage weight loss and maintenance in those service users who are overweight. We will also address how to provide nutritional support to service users with low BMI and who are losing weight as a consequence of their disability or due to dysphagia.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:
• Describe and explain the Eatwell Guide
• Assess whether a service users’ diet is balanced
• Develop and action plan to promote healthy eating
• Identify strategies to promote personalised nutritional care plans to promote weight loss where necessary
• Critique the current menu provision for service users with a Learning Disability
• Formulate or improve current menu plans for service users that meet appropriate nutritional guidelines
• List the symptoms of dysphagia
• Discuss the nutritional implications of dysphagia in service users with Learning Disabilities
• Describe how to promote and provide nutritional support taking a ‘Food First’ approach to service users who are underweight or losing weight

Requirements and expectations

Learners will be expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, share their own experiences of working in the care sector, whilst respecting confidentiality, and to share best practice examples

A Onefile (e-portfolio) profile will be created on the learners behalf to support them in the completion of their course
