Nutrition and Diabetes – Cohort 3

Course description

This course is suitable for all levels of staff who are working in older people care services within residential, nursing or homecare environments.

During this course we will focus on the importance of taking a person-centred approach when supporting a service user with diabetes. An understanding of the different medical therapies and treatments is important, in addition to appreciating the differing dietary approaches that are necessary in order to provide personalised care and support

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:
• Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
• Describe the dietary guidelines for Diabetes
• Explain the different dietary needs of a diabetic service user who is overweight, underweight or at the end of life
• Describe the different medical treatments for diabetes
• Differentiate between hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia and recognise how to treat both conditions
• Recognise the psychological and environmental factors that may influence compliance with dietary and medical treatments for people with diabetes

Requirements and expectations

Learners will be expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, share their own experiences of working in the care sector, whilst respecting confidentiality, and to share best practice examples

A Onefile (e-portfolio) profile will be created on the learners behalf to support them in the completion of their course
