Description

Recap on the essential elements contained within the Mental Capacity Act, the practical steps in assessing capacity, an in depth look at best practice in assessing and recording capacity, making Best Interests Decisions  including how to conduct best interests meetings & role of the Court of Protection, recognising the big three questions when looking at deprivation of liberty (DOL), the Mental Capacity Amendment Bill and progress on change to the legislation including replacing DOLS with Liberty Protection Safeguards.

Learning Outcomes

 Good grasp of the key elements of the Mental Capacity Act
 Understanding what is meant by capacity & lack of capacity and what might influence it
 Understanding useful approaches to enabling a person to make their own decision
 Using a memory aid to learn and use the Five Core Principles
 Understanding the role of deputies and attorneys and how to check and challenge where needed
 Understand the rules associated with advanced decisions
 Understanding the role of the Local IMCA service run by POhWER

Requirements 

Delegates will have completed E-Learning or have attended an introductory course.
