Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards for Managers – Cohort 8

This course covers the essential elements contained within the Mental Capacity Act, including:
• the core principles of the MCA
• assessing capacity
• learning who can make decisions
• lasting power of attorney and advance decisions
• independent mental capacity advocates
• ‘best interests’ decisions
• authority for action, restraint
• DoLS (Deprivations of Liberty Safeguards)
• Useful resources

Learning objectives:
• Identify their legal responsibilities under the MCA
• Apply MCA principles when managing care services
• Explore roles and responsibilities for making decisions under the MCA
• Recall how to use a framework for supporting and involving people when making decisions

Learners will be expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, share their own experiences of working in the care sector, whilst respecting confidentiality, and to share best practice examples. Delegates will have completed E-Learning or have attended an introductory course.
