Care Certificate – Cohort E2

Course Description

The Care Certificate was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health. It is an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors. It is made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are ‘new to care’ and should form part of a robust induction programme.

The Care Certificate:

  • – is the beginning of the career journey for those new to care
  • – is a foundation for health and adult social care integration
  • – ensures those new to the sector are supported
  • – is endorsed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
  • – is a CQC expectation
  • – all employers should now be offering it.

Learners from HCPA member organisations will also gain a Level 1 Award in Health and Social Care alongside the knowledge elements of the Care Certificate

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to: – Know the principles and values that underpin work in health and social care – Know ways to respect and value those who access services – Understand what is meant by ‘person‐centred’ support – Know the importance to individuals of ‘person‐centred’ support – Know the most common types of dementia – Know the signs and symptoms of common types of dementia – Know about good practice in caring for an individual with dementia – Understand protection and safeguarding – Know the range of service provision available in health and social care – Know the range and scope of roles within health and social care – Understand the importance of healthy eating – Understand the importance of drinking enough to stay healthy – Know the main responsibilities of workers and employers for health and safety – Understand the importance of assessing risk in relation to health and safety – Understand the importance of key areas of health and safety – Know what contributes to the reduction of the spread of infection – Understand the implications of duty of care – Understand support available for addressing dilemmas that may arise about duty of care – Know how to respond to complaints – Know the importance of equality and inclusion within health and social care settings – Know the effects of discriminatory attitudes and behaviours on individuals – Know the factors that affect equality and inclusion of individuals

*Please note, due to COVID-19 we are unable to complete practical demonstrations or competency checks for the following courses – Basic Life Support and Moving and Assisting, therefore we are offering knowledge only training for these topics and the practical competencies will either need to be completed on-site by a suitable person or completed at a later date once the training centre is fully open*


Learners will be expected to attend all sessions, complete coursework within agreed timeframes (T&C’s apply), be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, and share their own experiences of working in the care sector, whilst respecting confidentiality
